The Chair of Architectural Design

The Department of Architectural design was founded in 1991 by Professor A.V.Merenkov. The 10-strong staff of the Department consists of 5 associate professors, 3 senior lecturers, and two instructors. The job of the department is to provide basic professional training for undergraduates within the two-stage architectural training system. The staff of the Department supervise architectural design training in 3rd and 4th years. Specialists, leading practising architects and teaching staff of other specialised departments of the Academy are regularly invited to supervise course and graduate projects.

The Department has a programme of activities aimed to: Develop and improve the methodological architectural training principles in 3rd and 4th years leading to Bachelor of Architecture degree; Train 3rd and 4th year students in methods of architectural design focusing on urban environment, residential, public and industrial architecture.

The staff of the Department have designed and implemented a conceptual framework for training Bachelors of Architecture as architects capable of completing projects with blueprints.

Within this framework the curriculum of the Department includes such a discipline as Blueprint Design, and all graduate projects provide for a set of blueprints to be completed based on an earlier completed sketch project within one of the following specialties:

Town planning 290101

Architecture of public and residential buildings 290102

Architecture of industrial buildings and structures 290103

The staff of the Department have designed and implemented the method of functional composition modelling. One of the leading design training methods used by the staff is competition design. A number of competition projects submitted by students of the Department have been awarded prizes at international, republican and city competitions (see illustrations).

The staff and postgraduate students of the Department conducts research in the following areas: Improvement of planning and engineering services for school buildings allowing for sanitary and climatic requirements; Architecture and composition of living environment; Small businesses in the context of urban development; Improvement of the typological structure of modern resorts and tourist sights in the Urals; Urban planning of regional transport network (with reference to the Urals); Industrial architecture for urban places; Development of a methodological basis of architectural design practice.

The staff of the Department are engaged in experimental and competition design in the following areas: Reconstruction of housing estates; Residential architecture; School buildings; Large public buildings; Interior design for residential and public buildings; Lighting design for residential and public buildings.A high level of professional training for bachelors of architecture provided by the Department is confirmed by prizes and awards won by its graduates at international competitions of course and graduate diploma projects.
