The Chair of Architecture of Industrial Buildings and Structures

This specialisation was founded in 1947. The Chair was set up in 1967 by Professor N.S.Alferov. The Chair has been brought to its current level through the effort of 35 people. Currently the Chair is headed by Professor A.V.Popov. The staff consists of 9 people, including 3 professors, 3 associate professors and 3 senior lecturers). Over the history of the chair 3 members were awarded doctoral degrees, and 32 ‘candidate’ degrees.

The Chair focuses its activities on the design and reconstruction of industrial sites; formation of new types of industrial plants, buildings and structures; adaptation of existing buildings to new technologies and processes; re-cultivation of disturbed landscapes; integrated development of urban environment; comprehensive use of underground .space.

The main areas of research are:

The revival of the historic mining heritage in the Urals; industrial town planning; heavy industry, agroindustrial plants. The Chair has published a large number of monographs, manuals, collected works, standards and programme documents and over 500 articles in central and local journals and publications including “Architects of the Old Urals” (N.S.Alferov), “Russian Plant Towns. 18th – First Half of the 19th Century” (R.M.Lotareva), “Architectural Design of Industrial Buildings and Structures” (N.S.Alferov, A.V.Popov), etc.

Practical projects include Alapayevsk Metallurgical Works, Casting and Forging Plant for Uralmash Company, cold rolling plant for Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Works, pipe-rolling plants, electric smelting plant (awarded a prize at a national competition); reconstruction and improvement projects for Uralvagonzavod, Chemical Machine Engineering Plant, Nevyansk Mechanical Plant, etc.; reconstruction of the central part of Ekaterinburg, planning designs for districts and living quarters, blocks of flats, cult buildings, and civil architecture in the Urals.

The ambition of the Chair is to train specialists who are capable of resolving challenging professional issues. High level of its graduates is confirmed by prizes which are awarded to competition entries submitted by the Chair to international and national competitions.
