WebWarper / Main Features

WebWarper provides antivirus protection against ActiveX and plugins

ActiveX modules and embedded plug-ins are the main ways of infecting your computer by viruses and spyware through the Web. For today, the only useful module of this kind is MacroMedia Flash, used for decoration of some pages. 99.99% of all other ActiveX and plug-ins are added to Web pages in order to infect your computer!

Of course, the browser prompts the user about an ActiveX (or a plug-in) and requires a direct confirmation that the user really wants to install this component. But most of people do not read software warnings and prefer answering "OK" for all questions. Besides this, at least one ActiveX, namely MacroMedia Flash, is really necessary sometimes. The majority of people, which are not professionals in the Web area, of course, don't know that they can and need to install Flash, but must not install all other ActiveX.

Unfortunately, the classic antivirus programs, that detect and remove viruses known to them, are very inefficient against such infection. The reason is simple. The way of virus propagation via ActiveX is very trivial. Creating virus or spyware in ActiveX form does not require high qualification, unlike a case of "normal" viruses. The virus in ActiveX is an absolutely usual module, working in the same manner as "legal" ActiveX. Any novice in programming can create such ActiveX in two hours and publish it in Internet.

As a result, the amount of virus software, implemented as ActiveX, is so large, that even most powerful antivirus systems cannot "know" about all such viruses and spyware. These viruses appear again and again, every day. As soon as the user agrees to install such ActiveX, the software can easily download from the web and install a ten of another viruses or trojans without any confirmations. They can continue the process. It's very possible that no antivirus will be able to remove all viruses after 20 minutes of infection.

What is the solution of the problem? It is obvious: the best cure is the prevention. In the Antivirus mode, WebWarper protects you against infection by removing all ActiveX and embedded plugins, except of MacroMedia Flash and Java plugin (which is also absolutely safe and necessary to show Java applets).

Antivirus protection is not provided, if WebWarper advertisement is turned on. Advertisement can be turned off very easily: see the F.A.Q. "WebWarper adds to viewed pages a lot of advertisement. Is it possible to remove it?"

Antivirus protection is almost absolute in case of using super-dense mode.
